Tackling Controversy in Writing
There are different ways of handling those papers that your lecturers will use to get to acquire your view on different topics. Due to their importance, you will have to define the written material and take a firm stand on where your opinion should lie. The aim of most controversial topics is to try as much as possible to give your reader information so that they can agree with your own opinion and disapprove his own.
As a student, you do not want to appear to lack the right information; you will have to try as hard as you can to let the reader know your opinion. You have to provide all the information that forms your opinion and ensure that you do not leave anything out. Here your main objective is to inform your reader as much as possible, provide all the information that they may require in order for them to agree with your opinion.
Since controversial topics will always spark debate, you will also have to labor tougher to ensure that you also know the reasons as to what forms your personal opinion on that subject. You have to explicitly inform your reader on the strong points that make up your opinion. You have to first bring out these strong points followed by some weaker points.
Taking a topic such as abortion, you will first have to state your opinion. This will inform the reader on what stands you take, this will give them an opportunity to know the ideals that they will be looking for in your essay and at the same time inform them on your opinion. You will then proceed to provide sufficient information on the subject; this will be the content that shapes your opinion.
When writing this type of essay, most people will go wrong when they try to show their readers the downsides of holding a different opinion. By doing this, you are only enforcing the different opinion; you should only struggle to get your point through. It does not matter whether the reader holds a different opinion or not.
There are quite some examples that should elicit a lot of public debate, as more and more people try to give others their personal view, the following can be termed as controversial topics:
- A paper that supports the use of force to combat terrorism.
- How to handle global warming.
- Papers touching on religion
- Matters that touch on sexual orientation of people, these will cover things like gay marriages.
